Van Gundy remembers Sanders as big Vermont hoops fan

Dallas — Pistons president Stan Van Gundy has an odd connection to one of the presidential candidates.

Way back in Van Gundy’s college coaching days in the 1980s at the University of Vermont, he had some interactions with Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders, who was the mayor of Burlington, Vermont, at the time.

“He was a big basketball guy, so he used to come to a lot of our games at the University of Vermont,” Van Gundy recalled Wednesday. “His son, Levi, went to our basketball camp both summers that I was there.”

But Van Gundy didn’t claim to have a tight relationship with Sanders.
