Column: Pistons' Stan Van Gundy learns price for NBA freedom of speech is $25,000

AUBURN HILLS -- Some among us can remember when there were no mid-game coach interviews, the great surprise at the first time seeing a baseball manager wearing a headset in the fourth inning to discuss strategy with a broadcaster, and when there was no reason to stick close to the television between quarters to see how San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich disrespected and deflected any sideline reporter who impeded his space.

Stan Van Gundy's next check will be $25,000 lighter, a bit more than a day's pay for the Detroit Pistons' president of basketball operations and head coach.
