The Detroit Pistons failed to make the playoffs in the weak Eastern Conference, yet several of their young guys give this team hope for the future. However, head coach Stan Van Gundy would love to add one or two more impact players. In addition to re-signing Reggie Jackson, here are three free agents we think they’ll make a run at on the open market:
PF Draymond Green, Golden State Warriors
Green has emerged as a star in just his third season in the league, but his short and cheap contract from being a second-round pick will come off the books this offseason. Golden State is paying him just $915K this year, and Green is likely to receive a max contract on the open market. As much as the Warriors would like to keep him, they might not be able to afford it with Klay Thompson’s max extension kicking in next season.
Detroit will throw everything they have at Green, who hasn’t been shy about his love for his hometown. His versatility is perfect for Van Gundy’s system and would make him the perfect complement to dominant center Andre Drummond.
PF Paul Millsap, Atlanta Hawks
Millsap’s versatility would also be a dream complement for Drummond in the front court, as he possesses true two-way talent and an underrated motor. He’s averaging a quiet 17 points and 8 rebounds for the Eastern Conference-leading Atlanta Hawks, and his deft shooting touch and impressive versatility makes him a prime target.
Wilson Chandler, SF/PF, Denver Nuggets
Denver was pushing hard but failed to find a partner for Chandler at the trade deadline, and they probably won’t pick up his team option for next season as they try to rebuild their team. His long-range shooting ability (nearly two made threes a game) would open up driving lanes, though he is still effective on the boards (5.9 rpg). He also has the kind of versatility that Van Gundy loves, and he wouldn’t break the bank.
