In the weeks leading up to the 2022 NFL draft, the Detroit Lions reached out to Virginia Tech tight end James Mitchell's agent and told him they were interested in signing Mitchell if he slipped through all seven rounds.
So imagine Mitchell's surprise when he got a phone call from the Lions during Saturday's fifth round.
"When they called me right there towards the end of Round 5 and said they were going to take me, I was pretty shocked," Mitchell said. "But very grateful and excited to go there and get started.
