ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- This isn’t the first time Detroit Lions coach Jim Caldwell has had to wait to find out his future with an NFL football team.
When Caldwell was with the Indianapolis Colts, he was coming off a 2-14 season in 2011. Team owner Jim Irsay fired vice chairman Bill Polian and his general manager, Chris Polian -- two longtime employees with a lot of ties to Indianapolis. Nine days later, Irsay brought in a 39-year-old to be general manager, Ryan Grigson.
At the time, Grigson had never met Caldwell.
