When the San Francisco 49ers traded for Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams during the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft, many questioned what that deal meant for the future of six-time Pro Bowl tackle Joe Staley.
The unknown was quickly cleared up by reports: Staley, a 13-year veteran, is expected to retire due to health concerns, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Traded for a fifth-round pick in this year's draft and 2021 third-round selection, Williams will serve as the 35-year-old’s replacement on the offensive line.
Staley spent his entire NFL career with the 49ers, who selected him 28th overall in the 2007 NFL draft from Central Michigan.
