Rob Gronkowski vetoing trade to Detroit saved Lions from themselves

It's a good thing Rob Gronkowski said no to playing for the Detroit Lions.

The New England Patriots agreed to trade Gronkowski to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday, reuniting him with quarterback Tom Brady and reviving stories of the trade he scuttled to the Lions in the 2018 offseason.

The Lions, you recall, were shopping for tight ends in the spring of 2018 when they approached the Patriots about acquiring Gronkowski.

The Lions and Patriots nearly consummated a deal before that year's draft, but the trade fell apart when Gronkowski said he'd rather retire than play for the Lions.
