Along with skills and scheme fit and injury history, NFL teams have something else to evaluate in draft prospects these days – the likelihood that they’ll be retiring early due to health concerns or other interests.
ESPN analyst Louis Riddick said in a teleconference earlier this month teams should alter their thinking when it comes to the career span of top prospects, and Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn said in his predraft news conference last week one of the hardest things to do is determine how likely a player is to retire early.
