On this date back in 2013, the Detroit Lions were on the clock in the sixth round of the NFL Draft with the 199th pick overall. At that point in the draft, teams are typically looking for developmental players or guys who athletically fit the bill of an NFL player.
By drafting Theo Riddick, the Lions expected to get a developmental running back with some receiving skills that could eventually play a role for them. They had just signed Reggie Bush as a free agent a month earlier to lead their backfield.
Riddick carved out a small role as a rookie, mostly on special teams, but in just three seasons he’s become one of the best receiving weapons out of the backfield and a matchup nightmare for defensive coordinators.
