Michael Williams was drafted by the Lions in the seventh round in 2013 to be a big, in-line blocking tight end, who could mix it up a bit from time-to-time and also catch a few passes.
His main duties, however, were going to be as an edge blocker in both the pass and run game. Williams started 40 college games at Alabama and finished his senior year with 21 catches for 166 yards and three touchdowns.

He suffered a broken hand in the preseason as a rookie and spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve.
