Matt Millen battling amyloidosis, might need heart transplant

Former Detroit Lions team president Matt Millen is suffering from a rare disease that might force him to seek a heart transplant.

Millen, 60, suffers from amyloidosis, according to The Morning Call in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The disease occurs when an abnormal protein called amyloid builds up in bone marrow and then ends up in tissue or organs. As the disease progresses, the protein can alter the healthy tissue it is near, causing organ failure.

In Millen, the disease is attacking his heart, according to the report, and generally, symptoms aren't obvious at first.
