Mathis sparks debate on NFL brain injuries

Rashean Mathis got a phone call from his crying mother over the weekend, when she read an article in the Free Press saying that her son's season was over because of a "brain injury."

Mathis suffered a concussion Oct. 25 in a loss to the Minnesota Vikings and, for the next three weeks, experienced what he described as "brief headaches."

He did not play in the Lions' Week 8 game against the Kansas City Chiefs in London, though team doctors had not yet linked his headaches and sickness with the brain injury he suffered.
