Gene Steratore is taking his index card and going home.
OK, the longtime NFL official is retiring from that gig, but jumping right into a job with CBS Sports as a rules analyst for both pro football and college basketball. (Steratore regularly worked Big Ten games.)
Steratore is the fourth NFL official to retire since the end of the 2017 season, joining Ed Hochuli, Jeff Triplette and Terry McAulay. Triplette already has joined ESPN.
Steratore's last game was Super Bowl LII, where the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New England Patriots, but he also famously was involved in an Oakland Raiders game last season in which he used an index card to confirm the Raiders were short of a first down.
