Gunther Cunningham has spent a lot of time over the past three years diving into analytics for the Detroit Lions as a senior coaching assistant. Now, he'll be doing it on a more permanent basis.
The Lions announced Friday that Cunningham is leaving the franchise to go work for the analytics-based website Pro Football Focus as their Director of Football Oversight. Cunningham has spent 48 years as a coach between college and the NFL, including two years as the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs and 15 seasons as a defensive coordinator.
He's been with the Lions from 2009, when he was hired as the team's defensive coordinator under former head coach Jim Schwartz, and spent the last three seasons as a senior coaching advisor to head coach Jim Caldwell.
