After years of being hamstrung by high-draft-pick contracts and excessive dead money, the Detroit Lions enter this off-season in rare shape with plenty of available cap room.
The Lions currently have 45 players under contract for 2016 and about $132.4 million in salary commitments.
With a projected cap north of $150 million, and the likelihood they free up more room with cuts or retirements, the Lions have the potential to be significant players in free agency if new general manager Bob Quinn chooses.
“I’ve looked into it a little bit and I think there’s room there for us to do some things and we’ll evaluate it as we go forward,” Quinn said at his introductory news conference last week.
