De’Quan Hampton might be the most freakishly gifted of all the undrafted free agents the Detroit Lions are bringing to rookie minicamp this weekend, but five years ago no one – not even Hampton – would have predicted he’d be on an NFL roster.
Nicknamed “Mega-Quan” for his junior-college exploits as a 6-foot-4, 225-pound receiver, Hampton caught all of two passes as a senior in high school.
He played primarily as a tight end and pulling offensive tackle in a wing-T offense at Compton (Cal.) Dominguez High, and when he walked onto the football team at Los Angeles Harbor College he was as green as freshly cut grass.
