The Detroit Lions have boosted their ranks at the tight end position ahead of Thursday’s preseason opener with the New York Jets.
With veteran David Ausberry still sidelined with an undisclosed injury, and Joseph Fauria less than 100 percent, the Lions signed tight end Jacob Maxwell after a workout in Allen Park Monday.
Maxwell was in training camp with the Lions last year, but was part of the their final cuts before the regular season. He spent time on the practice squads in Miami and Chicago last season.
Undrafted out of Louisiana-Lafayette in 2014, Maxwell will join Eric Ebron, Brandon Pettigrew, Fauria, Casey Pierce and Jordan Thompson in the tight end rotation.
