Lions release guard Rodney Austin following arrest

The Detroit Lions have released guard Rodney Austin.

Austin, 26, was arrested last Friday by the Mecklenburg Police Department in North Carolina and charged with assault on a female, interfering with emergency communication, assault of a child under 12 and misdemeanor Larceny. All are misdemeanor charges.

Austin’s release currently leaves the Lions with few options on the roster at left guard. Darren Keyton, Braxton Cave and Taylor Boggs are the only other interior offensive lineman on the roster besides starting right guard Larry Warford and starting center Travis Swanson.

The team has talked to veteran left guard Rob Sims about a return, and is expected to select an interior lineman in next week’s NFL Draft.
