The Lions’ need for defensive tackle depth just increased.
The team announced the release of C.J. Wilson on Friday, cutting one of the few defensive tackles on the roster with significant game experience.
Wilson joined the Lions off waivers in November, becoming the first addition of then-interim general manager Sheldon White. The 28-year-old Wilson had one more year on his deal, but new GM Bob Quinn cut him to save $2.3 million on the salary cap for 2016.
Wilson, who previously played for the Packers and Raiders, had a $1.8 million salary along with roster and workout bonuses of $250,000 each.
