While the national narrative on Jared Goff remains relatively mixed, the Detroit Lions have never wavered in their faith of the franchise quarterback. Whether it’s been general manager Brad Holmes insisting Goff was never considered a bridge quarterback, coach Dan Campbell telling Goff, “you’re good enough for Detroit,” or the monster $212 million contact Goff signed this offseason, the Lions clearly believe their quarterback will lead them to a championship.
And an interesting statistic from Carter Donnick seems to back up Detroit’s faith in Goff significantly.
Donnick created what he calls a “clutch score.” While he doesn’t reveal his full methodology, Donnick claims he collected 22 different quarterback stats for two situations:
- Third and fourth downs in games where the score is within 14 points
- Any down in the fourth quarter when the score was within 10 points
When combining all the stats in those situations, Goff came out with the second-best clutch score, only behind Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.
