Lions hire ex-Canes coach Al Golden to coach tight ends

The Detroit Lions are adding some more head coaching experience to their coaching staff.

A day after hiring former Maryland and Connecticut head coach Randy Edsall to run special projects for the club, the team announced the hiring of former Miami football coach Al Golden to be Detroit's tight ends coach.

This will be Golden's first foray into the NFL and first time coaching tight ends in his career. The 46-year-old came up through the college ranks, starting as a graduate assistant at Virginia before going to Boston College to coach linebackers.

After a one-year stint coaching linebackers at his alma mater, Penn State, he became Virginia's defensive coordinator from 2001 to 2005.
