Lions' Golden Tate eager for debut at big celebrity golf tournament

Detroit Lions receiver Golden Tate is in unfamiliar territory this off-season. Since Calvin Johnson's retirement, Tate has been expected not only to take on the role of Detroit's first receiving option but also to replace much of Johnson's productivity.

First, though, Tate has a simpler goal, and it involves damage control at the upcoming American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament.

"First of all, not to hit anyone with a golf ball, left or right," Tate said on a conference call when asked of his goals for the tournament. "And hopefully improving my game throughout the days."

Tate is making his debut at the tournament, which takes palace in Lake Tahoe, Calif.
