ALLEN PARK -- Matt Patricia said before practice that he was excited to see how Robert Ayers would fit in his defense. Four hours later, he's gone.
Detroit announced Tuesday afternoon they have cut the veteran defensive end.
The move comes as something of a surprise, considering Ayers was just signed on Monday. He practiced that day, too. But he was absent on Tuesday, then skipped his scheduled interview with reporters in the locker room afterward.
Ayers' signing was expected to boost a Lions pass rush that has struggled with its consistency in the preseason.
