How Detroit Lions helped honor 79 Michigan veterans, as they relived the horrors of war

WASHINGTON — The air was heavy with profound sadness, as Herman Moore, the former Detroit Lions star receiver, pushed a wheelchair down a bumpy path, leading to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

“Tell me if you want me to slow down or stop,” Moore said to his passenger, David Moore, a 69-year-old Vietnam veteran from Lakeside, a small town in southwest Michigan.

There was a tenderness and concern in Moore’s voice, as they approached the long black granite wall, honoring 58,000 men and women who died in Vietnam.
