Yale Lary was an icon -- for the Detroit Lions, for the league and for the world around him. He reached the Hall-of-Fame after a career spent entirely in Honolulu blue, and that's despite dedicating two of his earliest seasons to serving in the army.
Lary died at the age of 86 early Friday morning.
He spent 11 years with the Lions from when he was a third-round draft pick in 1952 until his retirement in 1964. He missed the 1954-55 seasons due to military service.
In those 11 seasons, Lary reached nine Pro Bowls and was a First-Team All-Pro three times.
