The Detroit Lions left the preseason without the X-receiver they’d been looking for all summer long. Despite plenty of opportunities, none of the receivers auditioning for the job justified their spot by the time roster-cutdowns needed to happen. Shortly after the deadline for 53-man rosters to be set, however, the Lions had not only extended opportunities to veteran X-receivers like Tim Patrick and Allen Robinson III to join the team’s practice squad, but they even brought back Donovan Peoples-Jones to see if some more time on task will help Detroit find their guy.
It does feel like the Lions are throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks, but don’t confuse this for desperation; the team’s continued search for an X-receiver saw them bring in three players to their practice squad—not deal away valuable assets like draft capital that helped the Lions get this plane in the air in the first place.
