On Wednesday, the NFL revealed all the team-submitted rule proposals for the 2025 season, and no team submitted more proposals than the Detroit Lions. That has become a more common trend in the NFL, as the Lions have annually offered rule changes since the new regime took over in 2021.
This year’s offerings are some pretty significant changes.
- They want defensive holding and illegal contact to no longer carry with them an automatic first down for the offense
- They want playoff seeding based on overall record, instead of giving division winners the top four seeds automatically
- And they want players who are placed on IR before the season to not count against the 90-man roster during the season (active 53-man roster + practice squad + IR)
