Detroit teams and athletes were quick to react to the verdict in the murder trial of Derek Chauvin for the death of George Floyd.
Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, was found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter charges after kneeling on Floyd's neck last May while arresting him. Highly shared cellphone footage showed Chauvin, a white man, using his weight on the neck of Floyd, a Black man, for nearly 10 minutes.
Floyd died in Minneapolis police custody May 25, 2020, spurring nationwide demonstrations and increased conversation — especially in the sports realm — about police brutality and police accountability.
