The Detroit Lions waived fourth-string quarterback Steven Montez on Wednesday to free up roster space ahead of this weekend's rookie minicamp.
Montez joined the Lions practice squad last September after backup quarterback Tim Boyle broke his thumb in the preseason. He did not appear in a game.
The Lions have cut six players since Tuesday to create room for their undrafted rookie class.
Along with Montez, the Lions waived linebackers Tavante Beckett and Rashod Berry, cornerback Parnell Motley and tight end Matt Sokol on Tuesday. Tight end Jared Pinkney also was waived with an injury settlement.
