The Detroit Lions will make NFL history on Saturday, being the first team to have their head coach—albeit an interim head coach—miss the game due to COVID-19 protocols. Of course, the bigger story may be that it’s not just Darrell Bevell who will be forced to watch from a hotel room, it’s nearly the Lions’ entire defensive coaching staff. Defensive coordinator Cory Undlin is out. The Lions defensive line, linebacker coach and defensive backs coaches are all out. The Lions will have to rely on first-time play callers on both offense and defense. And all of this is just five days removed from the Lions firing their special teams coordinator for jumping authority and calling his own fake punt.
