The Detroit Lions took the unusual step of signing a punter to the practice squad Wednesday, a move coach Matt Patricia said was due to Sam Martin's health.
Martin finished Sunday's loss to the Oakland Raiders, punting twice and handling kickoffs into the fourth quarter, but he reported an abdominal injury after the game.
With Martin ailing, the Lions signed former Michigan punter Matt Wile to, at a minimum, handle kickoffs and punts in practice Wednesday.
