Thanks to an old-fashioned accounting trick, the Detroit Lions are about to almost double their cap space.
The Lions are set to gain $4.8 million in cap room when NFL business opens Friday because of a move they made in March: cutting linebacker DeAndre Levy.
The Lions designated Levy a June 1 release at the time of the move.
Levy was immediately purged from the roster and free to sign with other teams - he remains a free agent - but the Lions weren't able reap the full salary-cap benefit of the move until now.
