Detroit Lions host ex-Giants starting linebacker on free-agent visit

ALLEN PARK -- The players are off for the first time in training camp, but GM Bob Quinn never stops looking for ways to improve his roster. On Tuesday, he kicked the tires on linebacker Kelvin Sheppard during a free-agent visit.

Sheppard, a third-round pick out of LSU in 2011, has started for the Bills, Colts, Dolphins and Giants over the years. He started 17 games for the Giants the last two seasons combined, and made 99 tackles.

He played mostly on the inside, while Devon Kennard operated as the top pass rusher at the position. The Lions made Kennard the centerpiece of their free-agent haul in March, though he was placed on the non-football injury list before the start of camp and has yet to practice.
