The NFL season hasn’t started, but the Detroit Lions already picked up their first victory against an opponent when they drafted big Arizona defensive tackle P.J. Johnson in the seventh round — just as the Baltimore Ravens were talking to him about an undrafted free-agent deal.
“It was kind of funny,” Johnson told Detroit reporters in a conference call Saturday. “I was on the phone with the Ravens and they were talking about a deal after the draft.”
Then the Lions rang to tell him he would be their final pick of the 2019 NFL draft.
“I tried to be as polite as possible,” Johnson said, “but get off fast: ‘Excuse me, but the Lions are calling.
