Birkett: NFL coaching searches dragging on in 2018, but the end is near

Bob Quinn promised a "thorough" coaching search when he fired Jim Caldwell on New Year's Day, and 10 days later it's clear the Lions have embarked on that - or at least a long one.

Of the six head-coaching positions to come open this hiring cycle, just two have been filled so far.

The Chicago Bears announced Matt Nagy as their new head coach on Monday, and a day later the Oakland Raiders introduced Jon Gruden with an eccentric news conference.

Last year, all but one of the six coaching vacancies was filled within 10 days of Black Monday, and the only one that lingered longer - the San Francisco 49ers' opening - was done all but for the formal announcement.
