A shared vision is key for Lions GM and potential head coaching searches

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions, throughout the Super Bowl era, have not been able to get it right when it comes to a combination of head coach and front office.

There have been periods of brief success, both in the early 1990s with Chuck Schmidt as general manager and Wayne Fontes as head coach, along with Martin Mayhew and Jim Schwartz building out of the 0-16 season in 2008 and even last season with Mayhew and Jim Caldwell.

But sustained success has eluded the Lions since the Ford family purchased the team in 1963.
