The Detroit Lions are diving headfirst into the offseason, and the team's first priority is re-signing its own players. They have several key contributors they need to bring back next season - but also those they need they need to get rid of. Here are three other notable players the Lions may cut this offseason:
RB Theo Riddick
Detroit's running game has been terrible for the past few years, and Riddick in on the books for $2.15 million next year. With Ameer Abdullah and Zach Zener proving to be more than capable of carrying the load in the backfield, the Lions would be smart to save that money and spend it on another position or need - or on a running back of higher quality.
DT Haloti Ngata
Cutting Ngata would save Detroit $5.7 million if they cut him, and while he's still playing well, he's not worth the $7.7 million salary he's on the books for next season. This class is loaded with defensive linemen, and they could replace him with a rookie for cheaper - or find someone for cheaper in free agency. Of course, they could also re-sign him for less, which may be the option they choose.
SS Tavon Wilson
Wilson started 12 games and played well for the Lions this past season, but is being paid nearly twice as much as his backup, Miles Killebrew, who was pushing Wilson for playing time. Don't be surprised if the Lions decide to make the switch this offseason.
