The Detroit Lions lost star defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh in free agency, who will sign a six-year, $114 million deal with $60 million guaranteed with the Miami Dolphins when the new NFL year starts on Tuesday.
Suh had previously expressed his desire to stay with the Lions, though acknowledged he would probably sign with the highest bidder, saying what team he played for next year would be his agent's decision.
According to the Detroit News, the Lions were close to matching what the Dolphins were offering, putting a six-year, $102 million deal with $58 million guaranteed on the table.
Both deals would have made him the highest paid defensive player in league history, but the extra $12 million the Dolphins offered appear to have been the deciding factor for Suh.
