In this Lions news update, the Detroit Lions are well aware that they need to run the ball better in order to strike some balance with their vaunted passing attack.
"I don't think there's any question that we're going to continue to improve in that area, we have to," coach Jim Caldwell said on Thursday, via Carlos Monarrez of the Detroit Free Press. "I mean, it's a must."
The Lions rushed for just 76 yards against the New York Giants in Week 1 and 70 yards agains the Carolina Panthers in Week 2 - middling totals that have placed the Detroit running game under the microscope heading into Week 3.
With Reggie Bush currently one of the NFL's top-10 highest-paid running backs and Joique Bell enjoying the spoils of a three-year, $9.3 million extension that he signed in March, the time is now in the Lions' eyes for the money to match the production.
Caldwell sees that as a not-so far off proposition, given the Lions' rushing splits in regards to the first half and second half of their first two games.
"I think when you look at us, we've been pretty much a second-half team when it comes to our running game," Caldwell stated. "I think we average somewhere around a little over 2 yards per carry in the first half and, in the second half, I believe it has been over 6 yards per carry, if I'm not mistaken."
"So, that just shows you that we're capable."
