Tyronn Lue’s leave of absence a reminder of the challenges coaches face in staying on top of health

Months before suffering his calf tear heard ’round the college basketball world, Tad Boyle was smacked with a different reminder that being a 55-year-old coach comes with at least a few humbling realities.

“We were doing a team-bonding exercise playing paintball in the fall,” said Boyle, the men’s basketball coach at Colorado. “And I pulled a hamstring. It was just an age thing. I’m out here playing with this 18- to 20-year-old guys, and I’m trying to sprint and dodge paint balls.”

Then in March, Boyle was trying to break up a scuffle following his team’s victory over Arizona State at the Pac-12 tournament when he tore his calf muscle.
