Officially, Spurs wing Doug McDermott has about four inches and fifty pounds on Bones Hyland, which made the celebration even more outlandish.
Late in the first quarter, McDermott found himself caught on an island against Hyland. The Nuggets’ shifty guard rejected a screen, danced toward the baseline, stepped back and buried a jumper over McDermott’s outstretched arm. It was quality defense on a smaller, faster player.
But as Bones trotted back up the court, he bent down and extended his right arm toward the court. In NBA parlance, Hyland called McDermott “too small.”
It was ironic on a number of fronts and funny because Hyland’s 6-foot-2 frame can barely contain all the confidence he has pulsating through his rangy body.
