American’s politicians making friendly sports bets: It’s a tradition that’s been around as long as, well, at least 1938, according to The Washington Post, when the mayors of New York and Chicago wagered a box of cigars and a 500-pound pig on the outcome of the World Series.
The latest one involving Colorado was far more tame as Denver Mayor Michael Hancock put up the Mile High City’s beer against the finest brews from Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler’s city in the Nuggets-Blazers series. Hancock had won barbacoa from San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg after Denver defeated the Spurs in the first round.
