How fitting.
Undrafted, the thoroughbred horse owned by former Broncos receiver Wes Welker, overcame 14-1 odds to win the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in England on Saturday. The 5-year-old horse, named after Welker’s NFL draft status in 2004, gave American trainer Wesley Ward his first Group One win in England, a victory worth $473,000, according to ESPN’s Darren Rovell.
If only Welker had actually been there to bask in the glory.
“I can’t believe I didn’t make the trip over!” Welker tweeted with a photo of Ward receiving the gold trophy from Queen Elizabeth II.
