ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips called the shots for the league’s No. 1 defense last season and that defense sported Super Bowl MVP Von Miller and propelled the Broncos to the franchise’s third title in February.
And Phillips, whose NFL tenure as an assistant coach and head coach is approaching 40 years, was named Monday as one of two winners of the Dr. Z Award by the Professional Football Writers of America.
The award, presented each year by the PFWA and named for Paul Zimmerman, long-time NFL writer for Sports Illustrated, honors lifetime achievement for an NFL assistant coach.
