PHOENIX — The return of offensive coordinator Mike McCoy and the ensuing hire of quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave immediately gave the impression that the Broncos, under new head coach Vance Joseph, would be a pass-first team. And rightfully so.
McCoy’s 2012 offense in Denver with Peyton Manning ranked sixth in average passing yards (291.9) and led to Manning winning Comeback Player of the Year honors. And in each of McCoy’s four seasons as the Chargers’ head coach, with quarterback Philip Rivers, the team ranked among the top 10 in average passing yards.
But as McCoy tailors his system to fit the Broncos personnel, the run game figures to play a prominent role and is expected to be the spark to ignite an offensive turnaround.
