The NFL begs us to look away. Concussion concerns create squirms. When commissioner Roger Goodell speaks, fans scramble for the mute button. The Dallas Cowboys, America's (Former) Team, continue to lose games and respect as Greg Hardy's employment remains a disgrace.
And yet the league draws more eyeballs than ever. It boasts wild popularity because when played at the highest level nothing compares to the league's passion, violence and athleticism. Every Sunday, at least with traditional franchises and contenders, feels like an "I was there" event. Fantasy football plays a role, of course. Why else are you screaming at the TV when Tennessee quarterback Marcus Mariota rolls right against Jacksonville and shuttles the ball to the tight end rather than to "your" wide-open receiver in the end zone?
