OAKLAND — In 1912 Otto Rohwedder, of Davenport, Iowa, invented a contraption that would slice loaves of bread.
So, 103 years later, are the Broncos the best thing since the Otto Automatic?
Or, after five weeks, are the Broncos the worst undefeated team in the NFL?
Maybe both.
"Defense wins championships, and we're playing like a championship defense," Chris Harris told me after another Broncos' odd-but-true 16-10 victory over the Oakland Raiders at O.co (Oh-No-Co?) Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Afterward, as usual, seagulls and buzzards circled the field.
"Somehow, we've won five games, the offense has contributed some to that," said Peyton Manning in defense of his offense, which for the second game this year didn't contributed one touchdown.
