Ryan Harris remembers when he quit baseball. A hulking first baseman at Cretin-Derham Hall school in St. Paul, Minn., he buckled on his first curveball.
"I jumped out of the way," Harris said of his freshman year. "I couldn't hit it."
The right offensive tackle watched teammate Joe Mauer, who struck out once in high school, slug all pitches and figured it was time to move on. The two teamed on the gridiron. Mauer, a quarterback, turned down Florida State to join the Minnesota Twins.
