In March 2013, Jacksonville traded former 10th overall pick Blaine Gabbert to San Francisco for a sixth-round selection. He went 5-22 as the Jaguars’ starter with more interceptions (24) than touchdowns (22).
Gabbert was a bust, but the Jaguars still got something for him.
The point: Quarterbacks with starting experience always have value, even with sub-par statistics.
The latest example is soon-to-be-former Broncos quarterback Case Keenum, who has 54 starts (26-28 record) on his resume. The Washington Redskins have agreed to acquire Keenum from the Broncos when the league year starts on Wednesday. It was a terrific trade by Broncos general manager John Elway, who unloaded a player he will replace with Joe Flacco and got a large chunk of Keenum’s $21 million cap hit off the books.
