My earliest introduction to Ken Stabler came from NFL Films. The voice kept saying he was a quarterback. He looked more like a pirate. I had never seen an athlete play with such swagger. Stabler always looked as if he were on his way to a bar or concert. He stood over center and didn't hope. He expected to crush dreams and steal dames.
Big games? He played in big games with nicknames. The "Ghost to the Post," The "Sea of Hands," The "Holy Roller," a famous fumble's journey into the end zone that finished with the San Diego Chicken feigning death.
